A brief blast in Brisbane

For the Art Lovers:

In the cultural precinct of Southbank, the drawcard for me was an art exhibition I wanted to see at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA). Once we got to the gallery, we were lost in a number of exhibitions which took the best part of half a day.

This area sits across the river from the CBD and in this area alone you can visit the galleries, the Museum of Queensland, see a live performance at the Performing Arts Centre, amble through a rainforest walk and go to the beach! Along with a variety of cafes, green areas and tour kiosk offering Segway tours and rickshaw rides it is a great hub for attractions. The beach is a series of manmade “beach”pools suitable for all ages with paddling areas for tots through to larger pools for the older children.

The Riverside:

Along the river on the CBD side, the city offers an extensive boardwalk suns along the river and along to the Botanic Gardens. If you’re a runner or walker, a wonderful place to be. In the evening, the many bars and restaurants along this board walk come alive and offer a large range of choices; From elegant at the historic Customs House to a casual coffee at The Coffee Club.

Best way to explore:

-          Citybike have bike parks dotted around the city for A$2.00 for a 30-minute ride, a great way to explore.

-          Translink have vessels that criss-cross the river and a far more pleasant experience on a nice day than travelling by car. The schedules are frequent and in the evening, this is a wonderful way to meander down the river between the lights of the cityscape and bridges. The city ferry is free service though if you want a larger vessel, the Citycat has a catamaran service offering a smoother ride for a nominal fee.

Pre-cruise or en route to one of the coast resorts, don’t overlook the sights of Brisbane. If you’re an art lover, check out the exhibition schedule before you go. If you’re a fitness fanatic, pack your runners and you can walk, run and bike your way around town.

In conclusion: Brisbane, we will be back!
