Earlier this year our Jill and Judy Bailey got together to plan a fabulous exploration of Africa. Jill has travelled on safari in Africa several times and lived in Southern Africa for a while years ago. Judy has travelled to Africa previously with World Vision to see their projects.

When it came to this trip the ladies decided on a bit of luxury and selected hotels and lodges in the 4.5 and 5 star categories. The itinerary was chosen to ensure they are visiting in the right season for the best game viewing, particualrly in the Okavango Delta. So the 18 night itinerary has been planned to balance luxury and discovery.

From Auckland via Sydney and Jo'burg a day's travelling sees us arrive in Windhoek, Namibia to commence our African exploration.  Seven days in Namibia sees us covering the highlights of its it vast wilderness, unique flora and fauna of the desert, rocky interior and the sand dunes of its stunning coastline.

We changed the itinerary several times to be able to confirm space on the Zambezi Queen  a new and unique experience in Botswana. This is a luxury houseboat style vessel allowing us to undertake our game viewing from the river with adventures on offer water-based game viewing, tiger and bream fishing, bird watching, 4×4 game viewing and cultural tours of the local village. This is followed by two nights at Victoria Falls in one of the world's most famous hotels for a bit of colonial style relaxation before we head into Botswana.

The trip was timed to be in season for game viewing in the Okavango Delta. We will be staying at two of the better lodges available - Sandibe Lodge and Nxabega Okavango Camp.

To give you a taste of a typical day's activities here is just one day - at Sandibe:

Morning Game Drive - As dawn breaks over the African bush, a gentle tap on your door will wake you to the delights of a new day. Your guide will discuss what you hope to see that day over tea or coffee and morning biscuits. Explore the floodplains and grasslands of the Delta in search of the Big Five, encountering large herds of elephant and buffalo or elegant sable and roan antelope. Return to the lodge for a sumptuous breakfast. The rest of the morning is free to relax around the pool, read up on the area from the Lodges reference books, take a walk (with a guide).

Afternoon Boat Ride - Explore the crystal clear channels of the Delta on a mokoro. Dozens of bird species, frogs and other intimate details of the Delta lie waiting to be explored at eye level.  On your return freshen up before enjoying pre-dinner drinks followed by a stunning dinner tucked under the forrest canopy.
